In the current climate, every day should be a money saving day, but for those who need some friendly and personalised advice, then Friday 3 July is the date to mark on the calendar.

That’s the latest in a line of successful advice days organised by Wigan and Leigh Housing, brimming with hints and tips on debt and money management, rents and benefits news as well as information on banking, credit unions and even energy saving.

“We will be taking a stall on Wigan Outdoor Market on 3 July,” says housing manager Vicky Bannister. “We’re bringing together agencies that can help: Citizens’ Advice, the Welcome Credit Union, as well as Job Centre Plus and benefits advisors. There will be so much information there – just ask.”

Housing and council officers are concerned that people take the benefits to which they are entitled, and that they get the best deals for gas and electricity.

Often the people who can least afford it have pre payment meters and can end up paying about 20 per cent more for their bills.

On the day there will be advice on affordable and sensible borrowing, bank accounts and how to get out of debt.

Free internet access will be available so staff can assist looking at online deals, and, as a special incentive, there will be giveaway energy products available too.

Vicky added:

"As the credit crunch takes hold we’re organising these advice days to make sure our tenants are making the most of their money. Bringing together agencies that can help in one place allows people to come and seek help without being asked about their debt."
