The borough’s biggest landlord has been praised for providing a better than ever service to its customers - thanks to a concerted effort to empower its employees.

Wigan and Leigh Housing, which manages 23,000 homes for Wigan Council, has retained its status as an ‘Investor in People’ following a rigorous independent inspection. Around 50 employees and board members were interviewed, and assessor Maurice Woods said he was “satisfied beyond doubt that Wigan and Leigh Housing continues to meet the Investors in People standard.” Mr Woods pointed to many improvements which have taken place since the last assessment three years ago.

  • Employee involvement has improved enormously.
  • Learning and development have improved with a wide range of initiatives to help people improve their performance.
  • Staff feel more empowered and are listened to by management.
  • Management themselves are more approachable and everyone in the company is clear about where the organisation is going.

The chair of Wigan and Leigh Housing’s Board, Geoff Roberts, said:

“We want to become an employer of choice to attract and retain good people. Whilst it is always nice to get an award like this, there is always more we can do to get even better. “Developing our people and our systems is all aimed at helping them to deliver the best possible service to our tenants. That is our number one priority.”

For Wigan and Leigh Housing it’s a triple whammy of awards, following hot on the heels of retaining its Chartermark and a Best Practice award from the Customer Contact Association.

Geoff added:

“These awards were in respect of customer services whilst the Investor in People award is given to organisations which improve their performance through the development of their employees. “I’m delighted to see that our commitment to staff is paying off in terms of a better service for our tenants.”
