What attracted you to Wigan & Leigh Housing?
For me it was the opportunity to work with a team of people who do a challenging and very worthwhile job. Being of pension age myself, I have first hand knowledge of the trials and tribulations senior citizens face in life, and appreciate those ‘senior moments’. Never at any time did my age become a barrier to employment.

How would you describe your typical working day?
I start at 8am and walk around the sheltered housing scheme to make sure everything is alright. I then contact all tenants on the intercom and deal with any issues and problems. My day will involve handling calls, carrying out checks, maintaining records, carrying out support plans and liaising with outside agencies and site contractors where required. We take the social aspects very seriously and run bingo/coffee mornings every week.

What is the best thing about your work?
The ‘hands-on’ aspect of the role really appeals to me. In the main, I work with people who appreciate the time and effort I invest in the scheme. Very often a smile and a ‘thank you’ can be much more rewarding than any financial return.

What skills or qualifications do you need for your role?
There are no formal qualifications required, but any qualifications or experience in care or housing would be beneficial. In my own case a degree from the University of Life has been of great value. It’s important to be a good communicator and listener with a caring and considerate approach.

What advice would you give to someone looking for a career in housing?
Take a look at all the many different career routes. And whilst financial considerations are important, appreciate the job satisfaction and career opportunities available.

What are the advantages of working for Wigan and Leigh Housing?
I feel that anyone who wants to enjoy a people orientated career, would benefit from what we have to offer. The training and development are of the highest order. And opportunities to progress up the career ladder will always be on offer. Add to that, the good team spirit that I’ve experienced and it will make your working life so much more enjoyable.
