What attracted you to Wigan & Leigh Housing?
After finishing my exams and leaving school, I was unsure about going to college. From my point of view, I was looking for a job where I could get experience in the working world and study for a qualification along the way. I knew that the potential opportunities here would be better than most other companies, such as different jobs and career progression and chances to experience the various aspects of the company and its departments.

How would you describe your typical working day?
My work is varied and some days I work on reception acting as the first point of contact for customers, dealing with a wide range of enquiries. But mainly my work focuses on our property allocations. This includes contacting successful applicants, organising viewings and dealing with sign ups. I also deal with different aspects of void properties, such as checking repairs and planned
works have been done.

What is the best thing about your work?
The most enjoyable thing for me in my work is dealing with people. I help people with housing and housing issues in one form or another and this is very important in their lives. It’s rewarding to know that people appreciate what you’re doing for them.

What skills or qualifications do you need for your role?
You need the drive to give excellent customer service. You must also be patient, understanding and a good communicator who gets on well with customers and colleagues. Some previous experience working with customers is essential. The Company runs training courses so you’re prepared for certain situations and can gain the qualifications you need to develop your career.

What advice would you give to someone looking for a career in housing?
Keep an open mind. Many people think that we just deal with council houses and repairs. In fact, we’re a diverse team that deals with a wide range of things such as homelessness, allocations, rents and void properties.

What are the advantages of working for Wigan and Leigh Housing?
There are good opportunities for career progression and chances to gain qualifications and experience along the way. The Company has a good reputation for supporting its employees both in terms of career development and through it’s people friendly policies.
