What attracted you to Wigan & Leigh Housing?
I had been in self-employment for many years, and personally the major attraction was the opportunity to take on a secure and worthwhile career that offered a good salary and generous annual leave.

How would you describe your typical working day?
Once I’ve responded to any e-mails and messages, I check the computerised diary in order to view my appointments and prepare for my day. A lot of my time is spent meeting with tenants on scheduled home visits, offi ce appointments, accompanied viewings and sign-ups. These meetings can involve a range of estate management issues such as breaches of tenancy conditions, neighbour disputes, rent arrears, homelessness and housing allocations. When I get back to the office I complete administrative work and update the computer system to ensure the information we hold on our tenants is up-to-date.

What is the best thing about your work?
I enjoy helping people to secure housing that is suitable to their needs and aspirations. It’s very rewarding to know that my work improves the quality of life of vulnerable individuals affected by acts of anti-social behaviour.

What skills do you need for your role?
To deliver a high quality housing service to our customers you need good customer care skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people. It’s important to be able to deal appropriately with what are sometimes difficult situations so mediation, negotiation skills and an assertive and mature approach are required. In addition, in this role you have to maintain accurate computerised records so computer skills are necessary.

What advice would you give to someone looking for a career in housing?
As a former publican with no previous social housing experience, I am proof that a career in housing is suitable for people of all ages and from all walks of life. I would advise seizing any opportunity for job shadowing or work experience to get on the housing career ladder. You should then take advantage of the many training and development opportunities available to help further your career.

What are the advantages of working for Wigan & Leigh Housing?
Job satisfaction and knowing that you’re making a real difference to people’s quality of life. I enjoy working for an employer that is genuinely dedicated to the care and welfare of both its customers and employees. There are also numerous training opportunities to develop your knowledge and future career prospects.
