How Do I Qualify

The Right to Buy is available to secure tenants of the Council and their eligibile family members who wish to take part. You will be able to buy your home if you meet the conditions listed below.

Eligibility

To buy your Council home you as a tenant must meet the following conditions :

  • You must be a secure tenant in a Council house or flat.
  • You must have been a tenant of a public sector landlord for at least five years.   You will find a list of public sector landlords on page 29 of the booklet ‘Your right to buy your home’ enclosed with the Right to Buy pack. This is available from all our offices or click on the link. 
  • The property must be your only or prinicipal home.

If you as a tenant are eligible, then non-tenants who live with you may also be able to take part, if they are eligible.  For them to be eligible, they must be :

  • Your spouse or civil partner and the property must be their only or prinicipal home.

For other family members to be eligible they should :

  • Have lived with you for at least 12 months prior to the Right to Buy application being made.
  • Live in the property as their only or principal home.

And be :

  • If you are not married or in a civil partnership, live with you as if they were your spouse or civil partner.

        or

  • Be your parent, child, grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, nephew, niece, stepchild or step-parent.

You will not usually be able to buy your home if :

  • You live in sheltered accommodation;
  • Your home is only temporary accommodation;
  • The Council does not own the property we have rented to you;
  • Your home is provided with your job (that is you live in tied accommodation);
  • There is a court order saying you have to leave the property;
  • One of the purchasers is bankrupt, has a bankruptcy petition pending or has unfulfilled credit arrangements.
  • It has been scheduled for demolition and the application to buy was received on or after January 18th 2005.
